Is a smart lock the future of home access?

By huanggs
Honestly, people go on and on about the "future of home access." Like it's some big mystery solved by lasers or voice recognition or whatever the tech bros are hyping this week. Remember when we just... used keys? Solid bits of metal? You knew where you stood with a key. Lose it? Pain in the neck, sure. But you knew you lost it. You felt that absence in your pocket. Now? It's all apps and codes and biometrics. My cousin Dave, he installed one of those keypad things last summer. Swore it was brilliant. Then the pizza guy figured out the code was his wife's birthday – seriously, who makes their birthday the code? Anyone watching him punch it in three times a week could guess it. Genius move, Dave. Real secure future there. But here's the thing that keeps me up: convenience. Okay, yeah, I see the appeal. Dragging groceries home in the rain? Fumbling with keys? Absolute misery. Had it happen last Tuesday. Dropped the eggs. Whole traumatic ordeal. Imagine just... waving your phone? Or even better, the lock just knows it's you! Like magic. Pretty cool, right? Assuming your phone battery isn't dead. Happened to my aunt Brenda – stranded on her porch like a confused raccoon at 10 PM. Future of access indeed. More like future of calling your neighbor for the spare key hidden under the gnome. Security? People talk a big game. "Military-grade encryption!" Sounds fancy. But then you hear about hackers figuring out a way to trick the thing by shining a laser pointer at the sensor? Or something? Saw it online, might be fake news, but still. Makes you wonder. My granddad's old skeleton key lock? Thing was a solid hunk of brass. You needed a literal skeleton key or a serious crowbar to get past that. Technology can be... fiddly. Remember the Y2K bug? Almost crashed everything. What's the smart lock version of that gonna be? There's also the cost. These fancy smart lock systems, they ain't cheap. Plus, you need Wi-Fi. Mine cuts out whenever the microwave runs. Imagine being locked out because your router decided to take a nap. My regular dumb lock works rain or shine, power cut or not. Just needs a key. Simple. Sometimes simple is definetly better. Did I mention forgetting stuff? Happens. Got halfway to work last month before remembering I left the coffee pot on. Easy fix? Text the neighbor. She has a key. With one of those digital locks... can I even give her a key? Or do I have to manage app permissions? Sounds like a headache waiting to happen. Spent twenty minutes once trying to order a pizza on an app that kept logging me out. Imagine that stress when you need into your actual house after a long day? No thanks. Maybe just stick the key under the gnome and hope the squirrels don't learn to drive. So, is it the future? Maybe for some. Early adopters and folks who never lose anything more expensive than a pen lid. But for me? My trusty keychain, jingling away... it feels right. Reliable. Tried and tested. Unless someone invents a smart lock that also feeds the cat and does the dishes? Then maybe we'll talk. Until then, pass me the brass key. You know, the one that actually fits. Not like that flimsy hotel card thing they tried to sell Dave last year. That was a scam definetly. The future can keep its robots. What if they decide they don't like your face? Or worse... your PIN? Can't trust robots. Mine just eats homework. Annoying.
